The Pig Pen

I'm the last person I thought would ever create a blog. It's my lame attempt to give my family and friends a means of keeping up with my goings on and those of my kids. This way, I can prove I haven't fallen off the earth and that I do think of you all often.. even if I don't show it. Here goes!

Enough is enough...

Ok...seriously...whoever's hexing me really needs to stop as I'm starting to get really pissed off here.

Today was a scary day for me with lots of tears. Woke up today and Gus' right eye was all cloudy and weird. Took him to my regular vet his afternoon who then referred me to the Veterinary Ophthalmic Clinic at the University of Minnesota. Turns out he has a very serious ocular ulceration of the eye that has bored through the center of his cornea. Which apparently ruptured last night, hence the drastic reaction this morning. I can't imagine the pain the poor thing suffered/suffers. So far we are hopeful there is no retinal detachment as he still has light reaction in the eye. My only option in preserving the eye and restoring some of the vision is to have conjunctival flap surgery...tomorrow. I feel so bad, like I missed some sign that there was a problem. But honestly, he showed no signs of irritation. I was assured this is common with dogs of this structure. Still didn't keep me from feeling like the worst puppy mom in the whole world.

This surgery isn't cheap. And this is at an extremely inopportune time. But there are no options, and time is not on my side. The U awarded me a $500 surgical grant, which helps, but I still had to put down a large sum to cover the rest.

The prescription regime is daunting. Just getting the doses in tonight before he goes in tomorrow has been quite the affair this evening.

I'm waiting for the neighbors to call CPS or something.. First my kid's broken and now, 4 days later, so is my Gussie!
UPDATE: 3/16/07 Gus' surgery went well. He rested comfortably last night and went in for a post-op check-up this morning. His doctor is VERY pleased with the progress of the eye after just 24 hrs. She said it looks excellent and is doing better than she thought it would be at this stage. He'll go in for another appt. next Friday.

    :-(

Sorry to hear about Gus. :-( It sucks when family get sick or injured.

Hope he is doing much better.
